May 4th we are celebrating Stephens Backpacks Yellow Hat Day. The hat represents a 30 year long standing, committed member of our community, who dedicated his life to helping families and children in need as President of his son’s charity.
He volunteered through St Francis, Center Street Church, Canada Day Parade and events, speaking at schools to encourage children to get involved in their community, mentoring children for 16 years in his home, visiting Seniors to encourage them to knit and make items for children in need for Stephens Backpacks. You could always see him driving around in his Stephens Backpacks van with a huge smile and his delightful accent from Glasgow!
At his celebration he was described as always leaving a room brighter than he found it. He had a relentless passion in spite of his 14 year war with 5 different kinds of cancer to never give up and continued right until the end supporting Stephen’s passion to end family homelessness.
Yellow hats will be on sale soon. We will all wear our hats the week of May 4th. By wearing your yellow hat you are sending the message that you pledge to make your community a better place and leave a room brighter than you found it. Recipients of the hat will have a chance to win $1000 in Airdrie Superstore groceries!
May 4th we will be hosting a huge family event at Apple Creek where children will bring their sleeping bags, pillows and backpacks and watch Star Wars while adults can enjoy a wonderful Scottish evening of roast beef and yorkshire pudding dinner, highland dancers and pipers, an amazing band and silent auction.
When we asked Stephen what message would his Dad want to leave to the community. Stephen said, “ Dad loved people. He would want people to have Faith no matter how hard life is and to find their passion to give back.”
